Are You a Value Pretender?

December 23rd, 2007 by catherine

Source: Motley Fool ()

In 2005, Seth Klarman of Baupost Capital warned a group of Wharton business school students that a new class of “value pretenders” had emerged. Klarman, whose fund has earned more than 20% annual returns on more than $5 billion in holdings, provided the following description: “These investors apply a dip strategy. They buy what’s down, not what’s cheap.” Expanding that definition to include investors who simply copy value-investing gurus, here are a couple of things Fools can do to avoid being value pretenders.

Are you a value pretender?
We’ve all done it before. We buy a stock simply because we read that [insert value investing guru here] bought it. It’s not the biggest sin in the world to simply piggyback the great investors, but it’s not the ideal strategy, either.

Of course, investors could’ve made some great returns piggybacking on Warren Buffett’s purchase of oil giant PetroChina (NYSE: PTR) or Eddie Lampert’s investment in auto-parts retailer AutoZone (NYSE: AZO). However, there’s a lot more to investing than copying the greats.

Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with taking a glance at Mohnish Pabrai’s or Seth Klarman’s SEC filings; it’d be dumb to entirely ignore what successful investors are doing. However, investors need to ask themselves some brutally honest questions: If you found out that Klarman sold this stock tomorrow, would you still want to buy it? If so, why?

Do your own homework
Merely imitating the great investors might make you money, but it won’t teach you anything. Investors who simply copied Baupost’s idea to buy shares of student loan originator SLM (NYSE: SLM) would’ve seen their fortunes soar when private equity firm JC Flowers made a bid for the company. Unfortunately, those copycats probably wouldn’t understand why Baupost bought Sallie Mae, or what the firm’s price was.

It now appears that Baupost thought Sallie Mae had reached its intrinsic value during …

Pictures show deer herd is healthy
phillyBurbs.com
I just finished reading the last four issues of the Sullivan Review. The good people there send me copies of their fine weekly publication each year around the deer-hunting season. If you’ve never seen this weekly paper, it’s a real treat.

It’s one some might call a “throwback.” It’s fairly representative of many papers you see across the northern tier. Nothing too political or controversial. Just front-page headlines like one this week that read, “Dogs Older Than Three Months Need PA Dog License.” You have to love it.

The review publishes pages and pages of photos for about four weeks every year of all the smiling successful hunters that have stopped by their home office in Dushore and had their picture taken with their deer.

Nothing scientific about what they do. They just know what their readership wants. One thing everyone at the paper and every reader has seen over the last several years is the fact that the deer harvest is thriving.

Hundreds of happy hunters have graced their pages again this year. Dads, moms, kids of all ages, grandmas, grandpas, aunts and uncles are posing with their trophies. Some are of youngsters with their first deer. It doesn’t matter if the deer is a young doe or a monster buck, if it’s their first, the smiles say it all.

Some may find it hard to believe, but many hunters pursue the wily whitetail for years before they bag their first deer. Some of the photos are of seasoned hunters that have more than a little snow on the roof and are showing off their first deer.

But the overwhelming comment that seems to be used more often than ever is right there in quotes below each photo.

The oft-repeated theme of “the biggest” of that hunter’s life is …

Is Criss Angel to blame for Pamela Anderson’s marriage woes?

December 22nd, 2007 by catherine

Source: Fametastic ()

Pamela Anderson’s friendship with illusionist Criss Angel reportedly sparked an argument with Rick Salomon last week which resulted in her filing divorce papers last week.

According to Life & Style magazine, Pamela was spotted “cozying up to” friend Criss at LAX club in Las Vegas earlier in the month and a source close to the pair revealed Rick “hit the roof when he found out Pam was hanging out with Criss while he was off at a poker tournament. They had a huge fight.”

The source went on: “It was just another log on the fire. Their relationship is so volatile [that] I’m sure this won’t be the last time she files, but nothing happened with her and Criss; they were just hanging out.”

Earlier in the year, Criss was linked to Britney Spears but the pair insisted they were just working out (later aborted) plans for Britney’s VMA performance.

Pamela filed for divorce from husband of two months Rick last but when news broke about the separation on Monday, she wrote on her blog that they are “working things out“.

Did Criss Angel Come Between Pam and Her Man?

December 20th, 2007 by catherine

Source: Hollyscoop ()

Gotta love internet rumors! A few weeks ago there were some questionable photos of Pamela Anderson and Criss Angel looking very cozy while partying at LAX in Vegas together.

Pamela’s latest husband Rick Salomon saw the pictures online and “hit the roof when he found out Pam was hanging out with Criss while he was off at a poker tournament. They had a huge fight.” . Surprise, surprise–a few days later Pam filed for divorce.

“It was just another log on the fire. Their relationship is so volatile [that] I’m sure this won’t be the last time she files, but nothing happened with her and Criss; they were just hanging out, a close friend of Anderson’s tells the NY Post.

We all know their shotgun marriage isn’t going to last so Pam should file for divorce and be happily single, she already acts like she’s single anyway.

For A good time call DTE.

Like most carnivals, the 2007 Carnival of Lights has its share of rides such as the Big Truck, a ferris wheel, the Octopus and the Super Twister, and games like Knock the Bottles, Ping Pong Toss, Hatch N’ Egg and Dino Forest. But the biggest draw to the carnival will probably be good Christmas photo opportunities for families.

The “Winter Wonderland” tent, located at the center of the carnival and opposite the stage, is draped in lights and filled with Santas, elves, reindeer and toy soldiers in various Christmas setups.

There’s Santa leaning on a post and reading a book, on a sleigh hitched to the reindeer and coming down the chimney with gifts.Snowmen are out and about, and groups of reindeer pepper the tent, from realistic renditions to kid-friendly cartoon versions.Benches and seats decorated to match the season are located around the tent, and make great areas to sit and strike a pose. Some seats are incorporated with the statues, like one Santa with a seat on his lap.Julian Benavente of Dededo came to check out the carnival with his children, 5-year-old Faith and 7-year-old Julin. His girlfriend, Bertha Cepeda, took photos of the girls as they stood among the Winter Wonderland figures.”This is our first time out here. My girls wanted to check it out. It looks good. I was surprised,” said Benavente of the tent and stage. “A lot of work went into this, and a lot of lights.”Benavente said he will be recommending the spot to his sister so her family can take photos, too. His only complaint was that the parking lot area near the old theaters was dark, making parking somewhat tricky. The tent also features several Christmas trees that were entered by various schools clubs and nonprofit organizations into a decorating contest, says Corinna Ludwig of the Overseas Chinese Association Center, is organizing the carnival. The two top slots went to groups from Oceanview Middle School, the Arts …

ONLINE GAMBLING EXEC SLAIN

CEO of sportsbetting site found dead in Vancouver street

The Vancouver Sun reports that the bullet riddled body of 45 year old CEO of the Costa Rica-based online sportsbetting website 777betz.com, James Po Ho Cheung, was found in his car parked outside his residence Saturday.  The police have yet to establish who killed him and the motive.

Residents in the area reported gunshots in the early hours of the morning, leading to police patrols finding the dead man. An autopsy was performed Monday and both the crime scene and Cheung's vehicle are undergoing forensic inspection.

Cheung was president and CEO of 777 Sports Entertainment Group, whose Internet gaming operations are conducted from San Jose, Costa Rica. Last year the company announced that operations at subsidiary 777betz.com would be expanded using Chimera, an online gambling wireless platform.

The parent company was founded in 2005 and is listed on the US pink sheets as an over-the-counter stock priced at around 19 cents, giving the company a market cap of around $6 million.  There are 112 investors and the operational arm - 777betz - offers card games including Texas Hold'em, Omaha, 7 Card Stud and Chinese Poker, as well as sports betting and horse racing.

Two Tables Remain At WPT 5 Diamond Poker…

December 17th, 2007 by catherine

They are down to 18 players at the WPT 5 Diamond Doyle Brunson World Poker Classic Championship.

Day Four saw names like Gus Hansen, Huck Seed and Hoyt Corkins knocked from the chip counts, while Daniel Negreanu, Erick Lindgren and David "Devilfish" Ulliott still have a shot at the WPT 5 Diamond title and $2.5 million dollars.

Saying Negreanu "has a shot" may be a bit of an understatement. Negreanu heads into Day Five as the chip leader, finishing the day as the only player above the 2 million chip mark. In 2004, Negreanu was crowned champion of this event. He then followed that up with a third place finish last year.

Jordan Rich and Matthew Casterella began the day occupying the one and two spots on the leaderboard. The two were able to continue their strong play, each sliding down just one spot by the end of Day Four. Erick Lindgren, David "Devilfish" Ulliott and Ryan Daut are among those competing with the chip leaders.

Play will begin Monday at noon, and will conclude after the six-handed final table is set. Poker Pages’ live coverage the event can be found here.

POKER SKILL DEBATE CONTINUES

POKER SKILL DEBATE CONTINUES

80 percent skill and 20 percent chance?

The British Broadcasting Corporation has joined the poker skill vs. luck debate with a piece which examines the topic from the perspectives of a professional poker player, a statistician and a regulatory authority spokesperson.

Risk management analyst and expert poker player Graham Newman, who recently won $230 000 in an online poker tournament, supported the much publicised view of Gutshot private poker club owner Derek Kelly that the game is primarily one of skill. Kelly lost the case when he sought support for the skill view from the courts earlier this year, claiming that he did not need a licence.

30-year-old Newman said that although an element of chance was involved, poker was really about skill, but: “In any one hand of cards there is a large amount of luck involved. It is 20 percent chance and 80 percent skill which is done by creating the odds in your favour, so it is 100 percent skill in setting the right odds.”

But he added that, “You could get your cards in the best possible position and still lose that hand. That reflects the fact that you have skill to get to that point, using skill to get yourself into a position where the odds are in your favour. The bottom line is that skill is involved and it's all about creating lots of small edges on your opponents.”

Newman went on to detail the elements of skill involved, including reading one's opponent. This became more difficult when playing online instead of face to face, because online poker was faster and more remote, but it could be done. “Playing online you can't see if they are looking nervous but you can identify betting patterns,” he explained. “People are creatures of habit. I won't do very much for the first 20-30 minutes and watch players approach the game.”

“Some make big bets when they haven't got a hand and there …
